On November 18, 2008 guest speaker Sharon Navarro came in to share her job as a journalist in Public Relations. Sharon was very entertaining to watch and listen to, she gets excited and she found ways to involve the class. Sharon explained to us the difference between Journalism and Public Relations. In Journalism the objective is to inform the people. In PR the objective is to research things about people, for example like spending patterns, and with that research it enables Public Relations to inform and market to the people, like Sharon said, “The point of public relations is to sell”.

I was very happy that Sharon took the time out to talk to us about jobs in the industry, how important it is to be punctual and how much you need to market yourself. She also mentioned that there’s a lot of opportunities in Public Relations, especially campaigning.
In words of wisdom Sharon said, “If your innovative and resourceful you’ll find work”, It was nice to hear that because with the industry on decline and in relation to the factors that affect us students, it’s become a constant stress for everyone and were wondering about jobs for when we graduate. I think the more advice I get from people who have been there the better I feel, because the more I know, the more I understand. It was great having Sharon, it was unfortunate that she had to leave early, but I took in and appreciate all she had to share.

Although i have no intention of becoming a Public relations person, listening to Sharon Navarro was very helpful. She started to get the journalism bug when she received a job working for the gazette, it is one of the oldest school papers in Canada. with this information she reminded us that getting a job out of school is important and that writing is a very important skill to have in this industry. She currently works for the Ministry Of Health as a communications assistant. Sharon Said that making the jump from journalism to PR was good because she will sometimes use journalists for her work. One thing that i took from her was to never call your producer at 4 o,clock. As well if you are ever using a PR tape use a super, so that the viewer will know the validity of the piece.
I will be 'Pounding the pavement' in the next four months as Sharon said, so i could get a job. Sharon said it is key that we look for job's in the next four months.
Although she went to the dark side her intentions still came out and i felt that her values still stood out, for example when she mentions how she did not want to work for mcdonalds, being a vegetarian she found it a bit hard.
All in all i enjoyed Sharon's visit, Thank you.

The last guest speaker Sharon Navarro was a very interesting person to listen to. I really enjoyed her charsima and enthusiastic aspect on the business. She had a lot of background information on many different aspects of the business and it was very intriguing to see how far she has come along in this industry! She has covered many different angles in this industry and has a great deal of knowledge on how difficult it is to succeed and get ahead. It was very shocking to hear that only two or three of her classmates actually got jobs after their education. I knew that the industry is very competitive and full of struggles, but I guess I never realized that it could be possible to work hard and not get the goal that you strive to achieve. I also learned that you have to be very good at many different jobs in this indutry, whether it's reporting on air, producing a show, or even writing for the show. You can't just assume that you are going to get a job "on air" because that is just not realistic in such a competitive market!
I really enjoyed listening to Sharon share her life journey in this business and I found it quite interesting to see how she went from being a journalist to a P.R person, which are two opposite sides of the business! She gave me a lot to think about and a lot of insight on my own career path!

Although I found Sharon to be a wonderful individual, I cannot empathize wuth her position in seeking a career in public relations. She expound s the fact that her job which is to influence the public's behaviour as a good thing. it is my belief that any self-respecting journalist would know that it is not the responsibility to influence, but to inform and enlighten the viewer/reader. It is simply bald-faced propaganda that serves the purpose of influencing others' choices.

I myself would sooner seek a life as an educator should a career in journalism not pan out. I would find that route far more rewarding and my soul would remain at ease.
